The Chief Conservator of Forests and Director, Forest Research and Training Institute, Doresanipalya, Bangalore is the head of the department of the Research Wing. He is assisted by Conservator of Forests, Research and Utilisation and Silviculturists, located in different agro climatic zones of the state.
In the State of Karnataka, there are four Silviculturists and a Deputy Conservator of Forests, Social Forestry (Research), viz Silvicluturist, Central Zone, Bangalore, North Zone, Dharwad, Southern Zone, Madikeri, Eastern Zone, Bellary and Deputy Conservator of Forests, Social Forestry (Research) at Doresanipalya, Bangalore. |

Forest research was initiated as a separate subject in Karnataka Forest Department in 1953. There was only one Silviculturist posted at Bangalore till 1974, who looked after the research activities of the entire state. After 1974, two more posts of Silviculturist were created one at Dharwad and other at Madikeri. During 1995, another post of Silviculturist at Bellary was created. In addition to the four Silviculturists, the post of Deputy Conservator of Forests, Social Forests (Research) was created during 1993. The Conservator of Forests, Research Circle , Bangalore is the controlling officer for all the Silviculturists, Deputy Conservator of Forests Social Forests (Research) and Asst. Conservator of Forests, Utilization , Bangalore looks after the forest utilization research. |

The research, utilization and training wings work under the administrative control of the Director, FORTI who is in the rank of The Chief Conservator of Forests, who reports to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Evaluation, Working Plan, Research and Training), Bangalore ..The campus for FORTI has been established in an area of 35 ha at Doresanipalya off Banneraghatta road, (near Indian Institute of Management) in Bangalore . |

There are about 72 research sites distributed in different agro climatic zones of the state. Further, there are about 25 research nurseries some of them equipped with green houses, mist-chambers, shade houses and germ plasm banks. These are producing quality seedlings including grafts of various species. The forest research involves various subjects like; exotic species trials, under planting in gaps, nursery technique, selection of Plus trees, establishment of Clonal Seed Orchards, Seedlings Seed Orchards, creation of clonal/germ plasm banks, provenance trials, progeny trials, field trial of tissue culture plantlets, identification of seed stands, seed technology, cultivation of medicinal plants, agro-forestry research and publicity & extension. |
