  Forestry and Environment Project for the Eastern Plains of Karnataka assisted by Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC)  
  The Forestry and Environment Project for Eastern Plains of Karnataka was implemented from 1997-98 to 2001-02 with the financial assistance from Japan Bank for International Co-operation. The project period was further extended for 3 years from 2002-03 to 2004-05 as per JBIC approval letter dated 28-12-2001. The project has been implemented in 141 taluks in 23 districts except in the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu fully and partially in Shimoga, Hassan, Chickmangalur, Mysore and Belgaum districts. The project was implemented at a total cost of Rs. 598.280 crores. This Rs.472.35 crores was reimbursable by the JBIC, and the balance of Rs. 125.93 crores was to be borne by the State as the State’s share of the Project Cost.  
     
  Out of the 4,97,500 ha. targeted for treatment 1,97,500 ha. was in the reserved forests & in the non forest government lands which was treated with tree planting and soil and water conservation works through 12 site specific technical models of treatment. The remaining 3,00,000 ha. is private farm land was treated through the sale of 23.70 crores seedlings of wide varieties of species required by the farmers & by extending them advisory services in tree cropping & tree husbandry. The salient features of the scheme are :-  
     
 
1.
Afforestation, soil and water conservation in areas of Eastern Plains.
2.
Conservation and Maintenance of Ecologically Sensitive areas of Eastern Plains.
3.
Supply of Fuel, fodder,Green Manure, Small Timber, Minor Forest Produce, Fruits and Medicinal plants from the Community forestry and farm forestry plantations.
4.
Distribution of seedlings of above species for farm forestry.
5.
Carrying out publicity and Extension programmes.
6.
Conservation and Development of Lakes and Tanks.
7.
Employment Generation in Wasteland and Degraded Forests.
8.
Implementation of JFPM
9.
Construction of Residential and Non-Residential Buildings and Civil structures for Staff and Office purpose.
