The KFDC has in its possession 73,000 ha. of degraded Reserve Forest lands handed over by Karnataka Forest Department. KFDC has raised fuelwood, small timber and poles and various minor forest produce like eucalyptus acacia, bamboo, teak, tamarind, casurina and rubber plantations. These plantation are spread over various districts of Karnataka like Shimoga, Chickmaglur, Hassan, Haveri, Dharwad, Belgaum, Dakshina Kannada, Kolar and Tumkur districts of Karnataka, which are situated along the Western Ghats and constitute a fragile eco-system. These areas are highly backward and the local people are dependent on various kinds of benefits derived from the nearby reserve forests.
KFDC is also maintaining 4,443 ha. of hevea plantations raised in the reserve forests of Dakshina Kannada District. These plantation were raised with objective of rehabilitating Ceylon Repartiates under Indo-Srilanka Pact, 1961. As per the agreement, 2,000 persons have been successfully rehabilitated.
The Hevea plantations were raised and maintained by the officers deputed from Karnataka Forest Department, raising and maintenance of Hevea plantations not only serves the purpose the rehabilitation but also improves the socio-economic conditions of thousands of local people. The local economy of Sullia and Puttur talukas depend on these plantations. Apart from this, the presence of this plantation help in preventing degradation of the open forest land and conserves the soil. These operations are highly labour intensive.
