  II. List of trees and shrubs which may be grown in semi-arid areas of Karnataka and their uses

1 Agave sisalna &other Agave splecies (Kathale, Kallunary) Fibres from the leaves used for making ropes, species with spines serve as a good hedge plant. Grown to prevent erosion.
2 Acacia nilotica (Acacia arabica, Jali, Kari Jali, Babul) Leaves as fodder, timber for fence posts. Agricultural implements, cart parts. Tannin from bark. Green pods as fodder to cattle, goats etc., gum from cuts on trunk.
3 Acacia auriculiformis (Bengal jali, Haladi-meese mara) Wood for fuel, carvings, furniture and agricultural implements. Leaves are and class fodder. Tree in shelter belts.
4 Acacia catechu (Kagli, Khair) Wood for cutch and katha. Tree a sand binder and lac host, leaves as fodder.
5 Acacia ferruginea (Banni) Wood for house construction, carts and agricultural implements, Tree in wind breaks.
6 Acacia planiformis (Chhathri mara, Budde jali,) Wood for fuel and agricultural implements and pulp. Pods are eaten by cattle and goats. Tree in wind breaks and shelter belts.
7 Allanthus excelsa (Dadda mara, Musimara) Tree as wind break and sand binder, wood for match industry.
8 Albizzia amara (Chujjalu, Chuggalu, Bilkimbi Kadaeege) Wood used in rural house and card construction. Pulverised dried leaves used in washing hair and jewellery
9 Albizzia lebbek (Bage) Wood for Agl. Implements, furniture, cabiner work, planelling, carving, wheel work, leaves as fodder. Tree in wind breaks and shelter belts.
10 Anacardium occidentale (Geru) Fruits and nuts edible, Fruits for pheny, shell oil for caulking beats. Tree in shelter belts.
11 Artocarpus intergrifolia (Halasu, Jack) Wood for construction, fruit edible. Tree in shelter belts.
12 Azadirachta indica (Neem, Bevu) Leaves for fodder, wood for building, furniture, Agl. Implements, seeds for oil. Leaves and seed oil medicinal. Tree in shelter belts.
13 Bauhinia variegata (Kanchivalda mara) Leaves for fodder, wood for Agl. Implements; bark for tanning. Tree in shelter belts.
14 Butea monosperma (Muthuga) Wood for well curbs, water scoops; flowers yield dye; tree is a lac host; Leaves for eating plates. Tree in shelter belts.
15 Cassia siamea (Seeme Thangadi) Wood for Rayon pulp and fuel; Leaves as manure. Tree as wind break, and in shelter belts.
16 Casuarina equisetifolia (Survey mara, Kyasarike, Casuarina) Wood for fuel, charcoal, mine lprops. Tree used in afforestation of sandy areas and in wind breaks and shelter belts.
17 Dalbergia sissoo (Sissu) Wood for furniture, sports goods, carving, tool handles, carts and firewood. Tree in shelter belts.
18 Dendrocalamus strictus (Small bamboo, Kiri bidiru) Leaves for fodder, culms for buildings, furniture, for paper pulp, tent poles, roofing of huts, fencing etc. Clump in shelter belts.
19 Diospyros molanoxylon (Tupra, Beedi leaves) Wood for fuel, leaves for rolling beedies, Tree in shelter belts and wind breaks.
20 Emblica officinalis (Nelli) Fruit for medicinal purposes and as picle, leaves for fodder and tanning purpose. Tree in wind breaks.
21 Eucalyptus citradora (Niligiri) Wood for fuel, rayon and paper pulp; from leaves eucalyptus oil 0.7%. May be grown in bush from in wind breaks and shelter belts, so that leaves may be collected easily.
22 Eucalyptus hybrid (Mysore gum) Wood for fuel, rayon and paper pulp; from leaves eucalyptus oil 0.7%. May be grown in wind breaks and shelter belts.
23 Eugenia jambolana (Syzigium cumini) Neralu) Tree for planting roadside, along canal banks and Railway lines; wood for constructional purposes, agl. iMplements, well curbs and samil timber, leaves as fodder, fruit edible.
24 Feronia elephantum (Byala) Belada mara) Fruit edible; wood for small timber and for turnery purposes. Tree in wind breaks.
25 Gliricidia maculata Leaves form very good green manure.
26 Hardwickia binata (Kamara) Leaves for fodder and leaf manure; wood used in bridges, huse construction, hubs of carts wheel work, agricultural implements, mine props. Tree is a good host for tussar sild worms.
27 Madhuca latifolia (Ippe) Timber for constructional purposes, Agl. Implements, Oild from seeds, Flowrs for arrack preparatiion. Leaves for fodder.
28 Mangifera indica (Mavu) Wood for plywood, matches, packing cases and country boats. Yields edible fruit.
29 Melia azaderach (Hebbevu, Huchchu bevu) Leaves as fodder for goats, Wood for packing cases and planking. Tre in shelter belts.
30 Moringa oleifera (Moringa pterygosperma) Leaves for fodder and wood for pulp. Unripe fruits as vegetable. Tree in shelter belts.
31 Murraya koenigii (Karibevu) Essential oil from leaves. Leaves in culinary preparations. Tree in wind breaks.
32 Pithacollobium dulce (Seche hunise, Kodukapuli) Wood for general constructional purposes, posts, and firewood, fruit edible, leaves for fodder, Tree in wind breaks and shelter belts.
33 Pongamia pinnata (Pongamia glabra, Honge) Wood for cart wheels, firewood and tool handles, seeds for oil; leaves for green manure and leaves commonly as fodder. Tree in wind breaks and shelter belts.
34 Prospopis cineraria (Prosopis juliflora) Bellary Jali) Leaves and pods for cattle; wood for paper pulp and firewood. May be grown only in case of big farms if necessary. Good livefence.
35 Salmalia malabarica (Bombax ceiba, Kempu Boorugu) Silk cotton from fruit, from wood match boses, packing cases, samll country boats, etc.
36 Santalum album (Gandha, Sandal) Heatwood for carving, agarbathi, manugacture and sandal oil. Tree in wind breaks and shelter belts. Sapwood in agarabathi manufacture.
37 Sapindus emarginatus, and S. tri foliatus (antuwala) Fruit used as soapnum. Tree in shelter belts.
38 Sesbania grandiflora (Agase, Agasti) Wood for pulp, leaves for manure, for fodder and vegetable. Tree in wind breaks.
39 Tamarindus indica (Hunase) Wood is good firewood, and charcoal fruits used in culinary very extensively. Tree in shelter belts.
40 Terminalia chebula (Alale) Small timber; fruits for tanning. Tree in shelter belts.
41 Thespesia populana (Huvarasi) Fruit and flower for medicinal purposes; wood for turnery; leaves as fodder. Tree in shelter belts.
42 Zizyphus jujuba (Bore, Yelachi) Leaves for fodder, tree is a lact host, yield edible fruit. Tree in wind breaks.
